This is a platinum engagement ring, circa 2000, that we've reset with an interesting new stone -- a 1.35 carat oval chrysoberyl in a nice mixed cut. With the stone set horizontally, we think it makes a nice right-hand ring or even a stacker band, but could still do the heavy lifting when it's proposal time. Chrysoberyl is not related to beryl (the gem group that includes aquamarine, emeralds and morganite). It's actually a small group of gems that includes rare and expensive Alexandrite. In general, if it's not Alexandrite, it's just called chrysoberyl and it can come in various shades of yellow, green and brown. Our stone, from Brazil, is a lovely shade of green with plenty of yellow. The stone is set horizontally in a double prong basket with a small diamond flush-set on the top and bottom. The front of the band is carinated with a center seam and four rows of seven slightly graduated diamonds. We estimate these diamond sizes at 1.3mm to 1.8mm. With the two diamonds on the basket, there are a total of 30 diamonds and an estimated total diamond weight of 0.30 to 0.35 carats. Eytan says the diamonds are "pretty good," and rates them G-H color and VS2 to SI clarity. All diamonds are full cut and, given the age of the ring, we can confidently guarantee they are earth-mined (i.e., not lab-created). RING MEASUREMENTS: The ring tapers in width from 4.6mm at the shoulders (next to the center stone) to 2.4mm in the back. The band is a sturdy 1.4mm thick. SIZE: This ring is a size 7 and can be resized. MARKS: The inside of the band is stamped "PT" for platinum. No maker's marks. WEIGHT: This ring weighs 6.74 grams. Thanks for looking!
