Description: Antique, 1800's Copper Kilogram Measurement Cup For Barkeepers, Cooks or Pharmacies I have to believe this useful, hand-crafted copper liquid measuring cup was used in a commercial establishment, such as a bar in England or by English settlers in America with information for the vendor and buyer to see. I have seen items similar to this listed as from Sweden or Scotland. All the sellers may be correct because useful, well-made items traveled with people and went everywhere. Archaelogists dig them up regularly. I speculate this was used commercially for a few reasons. Impressed on the front are the years 1845, 50, 55, 60 as well as 1/3 Kilo. 1/3 Kilo is about 11.8 ounces. It measures about 6" tall by 3" at the base in a graduated, hand shaped form. Welded, riveted handle. Along the side is impressed a crown symbol. Before unified standards of weights and measurements were formalized everywhere, it was important that citizens purchasing a certain amount of liquid, like medicine or alcoholic beverages were receiving true and honest measures for their money. The crown impressed on the side let everyone know that a governmental agency had approved the accuracy of this measurement cup every 5 years. This is mostly speculation on my part but it seems logical if one considers The Victorian Era with simple, yet important ways of doing business. In any case, this is a great, historical antique with a story to tell.
