Description: 1938 JFSNC Jefferson Nickel Award Winning Design .999 Silver Set # 1015 of 1938. This is a limited edition two-coin set and includes both the Matte and Proof finish coins. The Jefferson Nickel replaced the Buffalo Nickel in 1938. The U.S. Mint held a design competition that year to design the new nickel. The competition was won by Felix Schlag, however, the Mint required Schlag to make revisions to his original contest winning design of Monticello on the reverse. The Mint believed that the reverse would strike up better if Monticello was changed from Schlag's original 3/4 view to a front on view allowing the relief to be lowered slightly and improving metal flow. In 2002 the Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club (JFSNC) commissioned Gallery Mint (Ron Landis, Landis Studios) to produce Jefferson Nickels in .999 fine silver, which featured Schlag's original award-winning design. Two types of nickels were minted, one with a regular proof finish and the other with a matte proof finish. A total of 1,938 individually numbered sets were produced by Gallery Mint and encapsulated by SEGS. The coins were originally sold either individually or in sets by the Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club. You will find several individual coins listed on eBay, however, now is your chance to purchase a matching set (Set number 1015).
