Exemplary of thedirection of things is the Tohatsu Trail-master. a converted version of the popularTohatsu 50cc Runpet imported by the HapJones Distributing Co. in San Francisco,California. We would like to take all of the creditfor the growth in popularity of the motor-cycle as a trail vehicle over the trailscooter, but we would be stretching thingsif we did. We can, and will, say though;“we told you so.” Lightweight machineslike the Trailmaster can easily be liftedover obstacles their limited horsepowercannot overcome, and their superior trac-tion, due to the larger wheels and tires, will pull them through situations no trailscooter can manage.Of course we cannot overlook the sim-ple fact that it does indeed require moresheer ability from the rider to make hisway on a motorcycle than on a trailscooter, but it is easily learned and wellworth the effort. Taken from the stand-point of comfort alone, a motorcycle paysreturns far in excess of the trouble spentlearning to master it.The Tohatsu Trailmaster offers justabout everything one could desire in amachine for use in the rough. The engineis a 50cc, single-cylinder two-stroke offive horsepower, which is not an impres-sive figure but performance belies it oncea handful of throttle is grabbed when thetrail gets steep and soft. Our test crew wasamazed at the way the power comes on.right off of idle virtually, and at the beat-ing the little power plant will take withoutobvious complaint. Several times duringour test in the mountains we scaled hill-sides ordinarily reserved for powerfulequipment and found that the Trailmasterwould pull a 175 lb. rider up all but thevery steepest of them with little or noassistance from the rider.Converting the Tohatsu Runpet to aTrailmaster is accomplished via the use ofseveral vital components; trials-type tireswith knobby tread; an overlay sprocketthat lowers the overall gear ratio using asimple mounting method Tohatsu calls the“four finger system,” which describes partof the operation of converting from thestreet sprocket to the larger trail unit; ahigher mounted upswept exhaust pipe andmuffler; a carrying rack mounted on therear fender; and a protective skid plateunder the engine to shield it againstboulders and the like.As in other machines of this calibre, weight is another factor in its favor, only140 pounds, a relatively small package tohave to throw around when riding it outof difficulty.Other touches we liked were the wide-spread handlebars, excellently spaced fortrailing, ball end control levers on theclutch and brake levers, quite long travel inboth the front and rear suspension, and amore than adequate amount of groundclearance.Paint and chrome finish is quite goodon the little bright orange lightweight, add-ing highlights to a satisfying machine thatis particularly well suited for its goals inthe life of a trail motorcycle. We wereimpressed, and we think our trailing bugreaders will be also. 16875-AL-6307-08
