Description: 1971 & 1973 ABA ALL-STAR GAMES Rare Sportsfilms, Inc. is the rights owner of this DVD The original 1971 and 1973 ABA All-Star Game highlight films have been digitally restored by Rare Sportsfilms Inc, and are now available on DVD for the first time ever! The 1971 game at Greensboro Coliseum was the first shown live on national TV. And, on this DVD are the highlights of the original broadcast with Don Criqui doing the play-by-play and Pat Summerall and "Bones" McKinney furnishing the color commentary. This rare color kinescope is comprised of the best and most important segments of the broadcast, compiled into a 24-minute presentation. As may be expected, the game is a virtual showcase of the greatest stars of the ABA. Coach Al Bianchi's East team includes the co-Rookies Of The Year, Dan Issel and Charlie Scott. Issel and Joe Caldwell of host team Carolina lead the East in scoring with 21 points each, while the game MVP and top scorer is the West's Mel Daniels. Other players on the East squad are John Brisker and Mike Lewis of the Pittsburgh Condors, Cincy Powell of Kentucky, Mack Calvin and Larry Jones of the Floridians, Neil Johnston and George Carter of the Virginia Squires, and Rick Barry and Bill Melchionni of the New York Nets. Rounding out coach Bill Sharman's West team are Roger Brown and Bob Netolicky of the Pacers, Zelmo Beaty, Glen Combs, Red Robbins and Ron Boone of the Utah Stars, Don Freeman of the Texas Chapparels, Wendell Ladner, Jimmy Jones and Steve Jones of the Memphis Pros, and Julius Keye of the Rockets. Every player eligible to play in the game is shown. When game MVP Mel Daniels scores 12 points in the second quarter, the West opens up its first substantial lead, and at the half leads 69-59. The West continues to pour it on, and during the third quarter builds a 17-point lead of 85-68. However, the East comes back and narrows the deficit to five points (97-92) at the end of three quarters. The East scores six unanswered points to begin the final period, and when Mike Lewis taps in a rebound, the East leads for the first time since early in the game, 98-97! It's close the rest of the way, and in the final minute, Rick Barry scores four points to lead the East to an upset 126-122 win! 1973 ABA ALL-STAR GAME at The Salt Palace The 1973 ABA All-Star Game film begins with a spotlight on some of the top players chosen for the game: Ralph Simpson, Bill Melchionni, Dan Issel, Mack Calvin, Billy Paultz, Julius Erving, Willie Wise and Billy Cunningham. This feature is shown over a backdrop of music and action from the game itself. The rest of the film gives the story of the game with live sound, including short sound bites of both coaches giving instructions during a timeout. The East, led by Artis Gilmore, George Thompson and Joe Caldwell, breaks away in the second quarter with some good outside shooting and tough defense that creates several fast break baskets. Cunningham, Erving and Calvin keep up the pace for the East, which results in an 18-point lead well into the third quarter. However, by the end of the period, Warren Jabali (formerly known as Warren Armstrong), Stew Johnson and Rich Jones begin to move the ball for some close-in baskets and with Zelmo Beaty's rebounding and the hot hands of Wise and Jimmy Jones, the West cuts the lead. The crowd comes alive when Chuck Williams passes to Jabali for the only 3-pointer of the game and the West passes the East in the fourth quarter. At the end, the film showcases game MVP Warren Jabali, as the West comes from behind to win, 123-111. Buyer pays shipping of only $3.00 on this item, which will be shipped out by Media Mail!
