Blue photo of submarine on-deck ceremony printed on cachet #2631 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. Cover franked with 55 cent flag stamp and a 29 cent submarine stamp # 2838e. The submarine stamps costs over $2 each. This fighting vessel earned eight battle stars in WW II in the Pacific Theater. The 311 foot Balao Class diesel submarine was commissioned 1 May 1943. She was ordered to the South Pacific in the middle of the fighting period. During her nine patrols this brave fighting submarine sank many enemy vessels and earned two commendations. She is currently open to the public at Pearl Harbor at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. We are proud of these "Greatest Generation" sailors and their sacrifice to win WW II.
