THE PAIR ALSO RULED AS KING & QUEEN OF HUNGARY AND IT WAS THROUGH THE EMPRESS "SISI'S" INFLUENCE THAT THE DUAL MONARCHY OF AUSTRIA-HUNGARY CAME ABOUT IN 1867. Sisi, the nickname by which she was commonly known, was renown for her beauty (amazingly at the time of the subject photo, she would have been into her 50s) and her achievements as one of the most accomplished and fearless horsewomen on the planet ... who ALWAYS rode side-saddle. The dating of the PC also speaks to the latter statement. One notices the almost impossibly tight/tiny corseting of her waist. Most women would have passed out by virtue of the limitations on oxygen intake combined with the side-saddle posture. It was a habit she began (along with restrictive dieting) upon the murder-suicide of her son and his mistress in 1889. Mortality became an issue. She withdrew from public life and went globe-trotting, largely unaccompanied, and there weren't too many fox hunts on the global stage she missed. She was assassinated in Geneva in 1898 ... an Italian anarchist was able to get close enough to stab her in the heart. Franz Josef, who doted on his wife, was devastated. Even with her death at the age of 60, Sisi 's tenure of 44 years was the longest of any Austrian empress. Even though she looks so much younger than him, there was only a seven-year age difference between the Empress Elisabeth and the Emperor Franz Josef. They had married when she was 16. While he aged, she just got younger looking as the years went by ... The image is a real photo. The PC has a divided back. It may be a later reprint ... although European cards from that era do show divided backs. There is no stamp box to aid the analysis. It is a beautiful card with a beautiful, sought-after subject.
