Scribner's Monthly: An Illustrated Magazine for the People and The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine 1870-1893 240 Magazines on DVD Includes period advertisements. Originally published as Scribner's Monthly: An Illustrated Magazine for the People became The Century illustrated monthly magazine with the November 1882 issue. "Charles Scribner I, Andrew Armstrong, Arthur Peabody, Edward Seymour, Josiah Gilbert Holland, and Roswell Smith established "Scribner & Co." on July 19, 1870 to start on the publication of Scribner's Monthly. Scribner's Monthly absorbed the second incarnation of Putnam's Monthly Magazine of American Literature, Science and Art. The first issue of the newly formed periodical was published in November of that year. In April 1881, Charles Scribner II sold his share of the Scribner & Co. company to Roswell Smith. The name of the magazine and the company were retooled, dropping Scribner or Scribner's completely. Scribner's Monthly was changed to The Century Magazine and Scribner & Co. was changed to Century Company. "The Century has always given much space to illustrated articles on history. There was something a trifle journalistic in a series of articles on the Civil War by Northern and Southern generals, yet even in these the editorial control was such as to insure a reasonable standard of excellence. The Life of Lincoln by Nicolay and Hay, large parts of which appeared serially in the Century, was of higher grade. In literary criticism E. C. Stedman had, even in the days of Scribners Monthly, contributed articles on the American poets. Without neglecting fiction, poetry, and other general literature the magazine has devoted rather more attention than has Harpers to matters of timely, though not of temporary, interest."
