Description: The Mystery of Edwin Drood (bound from original parts) Author: Chares Dickens Title: The Mystery of Edwin Drood (bound from original parts) Publication: London: Chapman and Hall, 1870 Edition: First, bound from the original parts Description: Hardcover. 190 + approx. 300 pages of original wrappers and ads. The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the final novel by the English author Charles Dickens. Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, it focuses more on Drood's uncle, John Jasper, a precentor, choirmaster and opium addict, who lusts after his pupil, Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, Edwin Drood's fiancée, has also caught the eye of the high-spirited and hot-tempered Neville Landless. Landless and Edwin Drood take an instant dislike to each other. Later Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances. The story is set in Cloisterham, a lightly disguised Rochester.[3] Upon the death of Dickens on 9 June 1870, the novel was left unfinished in his writing desk, only six of a planned twelve instalments having been written. He left no detailed plan for the remaining instalments or solution to the novel's mystery, and many later adaptations and continuations by other writers have attempted to complete the story. This handsome volume is one of several Dickens items we are listing, all coming from a private estate library. It is bounds from the six original parts isued. The text from the parts has been consolidated for ease of reading, but all of the original wrappers and publisher's advertisements have been bound into the volume at the rear. All volumes are uniformly bound in fancy 3/4 crimson leather with deep red marbled paper for endpapers and over the balance of the boards. Gilt all around. The materials used for the bindings date the binding to around 1890, and the bookplate of Julius Franke (1868-1936) is present on the front pastedown. Franke was a prominent New York City architect, whose work included designing the Wurlitzer Building, and it seems likely that he commissioned the bindings. This volume shows only the slightest shelf wear. The binding and text block are sound. The pages are clean and bright, with no marks or damage. Near fine. NB.
