FDC honoring "America's First Golf Hero" Francis D. Ouimet, 25-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Brookline, MA, June 13, 1988, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. GENE SARAZEN (1902-1999) won seven Major titles, including two U.S. Opens, three PGA championships (including the first two in 1922 and 1923), one Masters and one British Open. He won the 1935 Masters with the most famous shot in golf history, holing his second shot from 220 yards out for a double eagle on Augusta's par 5 fifteenth hole. A six-time member of American Ryder Cup teams, Sarazen scored a hole-in-one at the British Open at the age of 71. In his later years, he was a popular golf commentator. "Slammin' Sammy" SAM SNEAD (1912-2002) won both the Masters and the PGA three times and the British Open once. In 1965, Snead became the oldest player (52 years, ten months) to win a PGA tournament (the Greater Greensboro Open). He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1953.
