Description: A large original British Naval Chart covering a vital stretch of water which would prove pivotal to the defeat of Germany in WW2. Following the Normandy landings and the Allies' push East across France, securing the Belgian deep water port of Antwerp was key to speeding up frontline support and conserving vital fuel stocks. Access to the port was via the Scheldt (Schelde) Estuary, and its banks were so heavily defended that the Battle of the Scheldt raged for over five weeks before the Allies finally gained control of the shipping routes. Whilst there is no printing date on the chart, the last official "Corrections" were undertaken in 1928. Measures 112cm x 71cm. Will be shipped rolled in a stout cardboard tube. (At the time of listing, I have an even larger British chart entitled "RIVER SCHELDE from the SEA to ANTWERP" separately listed.) Bears two ink stamps for the 'Royal Scottish Geographical Society' whose President between 1946 and 1950 was Professor Alan Grant Ogilvie. He was also the head of Edinburgh University's Geography Department who recently sold this map as part of a much larger collection. (Following both World Wars, the government distributed excess stocks of Allied maps, along with captured enemy examples, to various national institutions such as libraries, museums, academic institutions etc.) Please see my other WW1 - WW2 maps etc. Seller's Ref - 2U / 276
