Initially, the hats were made by local tailors from “Tiger Stripe” uniform scraps. The name boonie came from a Filipino word: “Bondok” which Americans began using during the Moro (Moslem) Insurrection in the Philippines. They were opposed to President McKinley’s plan to develop, civilize and train for self government, suppress piracy, eliminate the slave trade and prevent intertribal warfare by the cruel and treacherous drug crazed, raiders and slavers. This word, bondok came into the American English language as “boondocks” and meant “in the sticks” or from a non urban, less civilized area. American Soldiers began using this word in Vietnam when the went into the jungle and Boonies became a necessity for them and part of the uniform. It replaced the regular patrol and baseball cap that was used. It has been used by the US armed forces in Vietnam and later in Iraq and Afghanistan with various different colors and patterns of Camouflage. The US Army first issued the hat with an insect net in 1967 and later in 1968 they began issuing the Woodland Tropical Combat Hat, Type II. The Australians used a similar side brimmed hat in WWII which they called the “bush hat.” They were called slouch hats or giggle hats because the brim was turned down and at the time looked ridiculous.They also used the hats in the Malay Emergency in which the British and Australian Soldiers spent substantial times in the Hot and Humid jungles dealing.
