He received his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in New York City, becoming one of the first men to matriculate the former women’s college. Elkins went on to study anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, where he completed the course work for a Ph.D. but never finished his dissertation. That didn’t keep him from earning two master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and California State University, however, as well as a doctorate in education from the University of California at Berkeley. Before tuning to writing in his early forties, Elkins worked as a professor at several universities. He taught anthropology to soldiers overseas through a University of Maryland program, a gig which inspired the setup for his first book, Fellowship of Fear.
