Description: Rare original SMLE Lee Enfield No1 Mk3 rifle laying telescope.If you have ever wondered how Enfield rifles used to be sighted in or evaluated for their accuracy (sniper rifle selection) from the factory, then look no further than the laying telescope.As part of rifle production; every Enfield rifle was sighted in by first securing the rifle in a rest (please see last photo for reference) and the laying telescope was placed on top of both the front and rear sight.The rifle was then test fired (removing the telelscope before every shot) for accuracy evaluation and then the necessary adjustments were made after each shot. If adjustments were required, the front sight was adjusted and or replaced and the process repeated until the point of aim was consistent with the point of impact. Overall the sight is in very good used condition; with mostly just some finish wear from use and blemishes from longterm storage.The optics are in excellent condition with no apparent marks on either lens and the sight picture is sharp and clear. The adjustments have been tested and function properly and smoothly.Maker marked "W. Ottway & Co LTD.", "Ealing London" and serial numbered 29. Extremely rare piece, very few of these were produced.Thanks for looking.
