NIXON - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 06/02/1971 - HFSID 257076 RICHARD NIXON His Presidential signature on a typed 1971 letter thanking Senator Norris Cotton for a vote against Senate-imposed troop withdrawals from Europe. Typed Letter signed: "RN" as President, 1 page, 6¾x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1971 June 2. On White House letterhead to US Senator Norris Cotton. In full: "I want you to know that I deeply appreciate your support in the recent series of votes on European troop withdrawals. This was a significant test at a critical period in East-West relations and I am especially grateful for your help. With warm personal regards, Sincerely". Mailing fold, not at signature. Paperclip impression at upper left. Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by matching envelope (7¼x4¾) with Cotton's typed address, unmailed. Rust from paperclip at upper right. Otherwise, fine condition. By 1971, popular discontent over the continuing American military involvement in Vietnam, combined with the apparent reduction in US-Soviet tensions known as dtente, convinced some US Senators, notably Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield of Montana, that it was time to reduce the level of American military forces in Europe. In a series of votes on the so-called Mansfield amendment, Senator Cotton, a Republican from New Hampshire, had sided with President Nixon in opposing these cuts, which both felt would be perceived by the USSR as a sign of American weakness.
