Those lucky enough to catch the Ducks then still speak about it reverentially. To mark Neil Young's upcoming release of The Ducks, "High Flyin" bootleg series recorded during the Ducks shows of 1977 -the rumored release date is Spring 2022- Phillip's, 76, has released a rare fine art print titled "Space Ducks" to mark this hotly creative period in both Jim and Neil Young's career. The Ducks bootleg series will feature Jim's original artwork throughout this much anticipated vinyl, CD and digital release. To be sure, this is Jim Phillips, creator of the Screaming Hand, first new release in nearly two decades. But during that frantic, sweaty summer of 1977, Young hired Jim to create band flyers, advertisements, and ultimately a record cover for a planned Ducks release that never happened. Much of the artwork Jim did for the Ducks has never been seen by the public and remains in private collections. Until now. "Space Ducks" captures Jim at the zenith of his psychedelia prowess, and features four "Teraducktyles" cruising through a moody, planet-filled spacescape. The attention to detail is astonishing. Only 150 prints -signed and numbered by Jim Phillips- have been produced. Crafted with off-set printing with intricate pin-lines framing the image on 100 percent renewable hemp paper, "Space Ducks" represents an epic collaboration between two truly visionary artists coming to fruition four decades after that historic Santa Cruz summer.
