Description: A letter dated July 3, 1840 from Callender Irvine, Commissary General of the U.S. Army, to E.S. Fayssoux, Military Store Keeper at the Schuylkill Arsenal, Philadelphia, PA. The letter is handwritten in ink on one sheet of paper measuring about 15 3/4" x 9 7/8", folded in half to make four sides (pages), each measuring about 7 7/8" x 9 7/8". The letter is contained on the first page. The middle pages are blank. The back page contains the address and filing information. The letter was folded and sealed, but the seal (of course) has been broken, leaving a hole on the back page which does not affect the letter on the first page. The words "Buffalo NY" appear to have been written in pencil on the back page and been partially erased. The paper is thick and durable, and remains supple. It is watermarked "AMIES PHILADA" with a drawing of a dove. There are fold marks from the original mailing. The subject of matter of the letter is unusual: Irvine requisitions one bugle for each of six companies, to be transported to the Poinsett Barracks in Buffalo, New York. Callender Irvine (1775-1841) was appointed in 1804 to succeed his father as Superintendent of the Military Stores of Philadelphia. During the War of 1812, he was appointed Commissary General of the United States Army, a post he held until his death in 1841. Edwards Smith Fayssoux (1812-1852) served as Military Store Keeper at the U.S. Army's Schuylkill Arsenal in Philadelphia, PA, from 1833 until his death in 1852. This item is suitable for framing. It would be a terrific gift for anyone interested in the Westward Expansion period, a student of U.S. military history, or someone who plays the bugle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
