Description: This leather wallet is not only a luxury item from the 1930s or earlier but also a piece of Jewish and WWII history. Albert Rosenhain founded what would become Berlin’s leading luxury and leather goods store in 1864. It was the flagship store on Berlin’s main shopping street Leipziger Strasse. The motto of the company was “A Rosenhain wallet fits in every pants pocket.” As a Jewish-owned business in Germany, Rosenhain’s store was taken by the Nazis in 1938 and “Aryanized.” One of Rosenhain’s wallets is on display at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, donated by the family of a Holocaust survivor and German Jewish refugee after his death. The Rosenhain Berlin wallet ceased to exist after 1938 when the Nazis liquidated the business and the Rosenhain family fled the country. Imagine what this wallet has seen in its lifetime!
