Description: An amazing antique Georgian solid 9k rose gold and rose gold filled carved carnelian intaglio mythological dog armorial seal pendant converting to a stud, dating to circa 1800. This outstanding and very unusual George III pendant has a lot going on and is packed full of symbolism wherever you look! The seal has a solid 9k rose gold head with a gold filled handle and bail, primarily an intaglio seal it has a glowing orange bevel-edged oval carnelian plaque beautifully carved showing an armorial seal centered with a fantastic mythological creature with the body of a dog, the chest and front talons of an eagle and the head of a lion, the beast is standing with an upright tail, pricked ears and is roaring with its tongue sticking out, the animal carved with such fine details individual feathers, claws and hairs have been depicted, the beast stands inside a double strapped and twisted buckle representing absolute strength with reverse carved Latin around the buckle reading 'Teneas Tuis Te' ('Hold Your Own' in English), the carnelian is bezel set in a lovely domed setting, the top of which has seven panels engraved with the days of the week in beautiful old scrolling Georgian script, the seal has a six-sided obelisk-column form handle leading to a large built in bail. Very unusually the handle unscrews to form three separate pieces so the intaglio head can be used as a stud-a one of a kind and incredible piece of Georgian history! The pendant is unmarked, the head tests for 9k gold, the attached handle and bail are gold filled, the inside screw system is iron. The pendant measures approximately 29mm x 24mm. The carnelian measures about 21mm x 17mm. From front to back the stud alone is about 10mm deep. The pendant weighs approximately 9.8 grams. The pendant is in general good condition with all over wear. The bail has some dings and dents, the head has a few light dings, the carnelian is in excellent condition with no damage and general wear. Please check all the pictures.
